"MERV"

Have you see MERV recently and wondered what it means?  MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Ashrae has changed the standard to help HVAC managers understand better what size particles the filters are catching. For example; a filter that is 95% efficient may catch 95% of large particles but at most only 50% of particles that are submicron sizes.
The Merv standard defines more clearly what filter is more efficient per particle size.  However you must be aware when choosing a HEPA filter because a HEPA has a Merv rating of 16 BUT this does not mean Merv 16 is HEPA compliant.  Merv 16 rates at 95% or higher and most HEPA's must be 99.97 or higher.
